Northumbria University

The Student Law Office® at the Northumbria University is a hugely successful clinical legal education scheme where undergraduate law students provide legal advice to members of the public as part of their academic and professional development.

The service is run as a full legal service just like any other firm of solicitors. Practising lawyers who are also senior academic staff closely supervise the students’ work and have overall responsibility for ensuring that clients receive a professional service. Students are divided into “firms” of 6. Each firm deals with a distinct legal area and has a supervisor. We have a small number of Business & Commercial firms, which are dedicated to providing advice on company, commercial and intellectual property law. Our Business & Commercial firms run a blog which says more about what they do:

Northumbria University was recently awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the outstanding community work of its Student Law Office. The Queen’s Anniversary Prize is the highest form of national recognition for higher and further education open to a UK academic institution, and is given in recognition of work judged to be of outstanding excellence and with positive impact.
