Student Law Office at Northumbria University (Newcastle)

The Student Law Office at Northumbria University, Newcastle, is a hugely successful multi awarding winning clinical legal education scheme where law students provide free legal advice and representation to the public as part of their academic and professional development.

The service is run as a full legal service just like any other firm of solicitors. Practising lawyers who are also Senior Lecturers in the Law School closely supervise the students’ work and have overall responsibility for ensuring that clients receive a professional service.

The Student Law Office is a fully integrated and assessed year-long module. All final year law students work in the Student Law Office. Their grade for the module accounts for almost 40% of their final year mark. The Student Law Office takes on cases during the academic year which runs from October to May.

Clinic activities

The Student Law Office is one of the largest clinics in the UK. It has 23 supervisors, 2 administrators and a trainee solicitor. We have approximately 200 students working in the office each year. Students are divided into “firms” of six. Each firm deals with a different area.

A small number of our firms are dedicated to assisting clients with company, commercial and intellectual property matter. They are known as the Business & Commercial firms. The Business & Commercial firms regularly advise on issues including choice of business structure, business and company set up, the law affecting social enterprises and charities, corporate governance issues, website “healthchecks”, advising on terms and conditions, trade mark registration and IP infringements. Clinic successes

Northumbria University received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the outstanding community work of its Student Law Office. The Queen’s Anniversary Prize is the highest form of national recognition for higher and further education open to a UK academic institution, and is given in recognition of work judged to be of outstanding excellence and with positive impact. Please see a video of our work and the presentation of the award at Buckingham Palace here:

The Student Law Office was also the recipient of the LawWorks & Attorney General’s Pro Bono Award for Best Law School in 2014. This is the third time we have won this award (2008, 2010 and now 2014), a feat that is unmatched by any other law school.

Northumbria Law School also publishes the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education, a leading journal in the field of clinical legal education. The journal is open access:

Details of your enquiry will be passed to the Business & Commercial supervisors who will then assess whether we may be able to assist. If we think that we might be able to help, a pair of students will contact you to ask you further questions and then a final decision will be made as to whether we can take on your case.
